The single highest-ROI decision in JEE Main preparation is taking the six NCERT books seriously. Here is exactly which six you need, what the exam pulls from each, and the three-pass method that turns them into 200+ marks.
Six: NCERT Physics Class 11 and 12 (Part I & II of each), NCERT Chemistry Class 11 and 12 (Part I & II of each), and NCERT Maths Class 11 and 12. Read and solve them three times across your preparation — this is where JEE Main Physics basics and nearly all Inorganic Chemistry come from.
The myth is that NCERT is 'too easy for JEE'. The reality is different: JEE Main is built on the NCERT syllabus, and a large fraction of its Physics theory and Chemistry (especially Inorganic) questions are NCERT lines, reworded or taken directly. Boards train you to memorise; JEE Main trains you to recognise the NCERT concept inside a twisted problem.

The sentence you should write on your wall
'Every JEE Main paper is a re-combination of NCERT concepts.' Without NCERT done properly, reference books have no base to stand on — that is why most '10 books, zero syllabus' students fail.

Why examples, not just exercises
JEE Main repeatedly asks questions that are 'twin' to NCERT solved examples with data or framing changed. Solving examples to completion traces the exact method the examiner reuses.
The trap to avoid
Skipping NCERT to 'save time' for reference books. Every JEE topper who says 'NCERT first' is telling the truth — Inorganic Chemistry is literally scored from those pages.
