Best Books for NDA

The NDA written exam is 900 marks — Mathematics (300) and General Ability Test or GAT (600, split English + General Knowledge). A finished shelf of seven books covers both papers. More books create distraction, not marks.

Paper 1 is 120 questions for 300 marks in 2.5 hours — 2.5 marks each with a 0.83-mark penalty for a wrong answer. The syllabus runs Class 11–12 level: algebra, matrices and determinants, trigonometry, analytical geometry, calculus, vector algebra, statistics and probability.

   NCERT Mathematics Class 11 & 12 — the conceptual base. NDA maths sits at 10+2 level, so the NCERT syllabus is the exam syllabus. Read theory, solve every example and exercise.

   R.S. Aggarwal — Mathematics for NDA & NA — the NDA-standard practice book. Chapter-wise theory plus NDA-style objective questions; the classic route from NCERT level to exam level.

   Arihant — Pathfinder for NDA & NA (Mathematics section) — a strong single-volume alternative that pairs maths with GAT, useful if you want one book doing double duty.

GAT Part A is 50 questions for 200 marks (4 marks each, 1.33 negative). It tests grammar, vocabulary, sentence improvement, spotting errors and reading comprehension — all at a solid Class 10+2 English level.

   SP Bakshi — Objective General English — the standard defence-exam English book. Grammar concepts, vocabulary lists and practice exercises mapped to the GAT question types.

   Wren & Martin — High School English Grammar and Composition — the rules reference. Read the chapter once when a Bakshi exercise exposes a gap; you rarely need it as a daily book.

   NCERT English lessons + editorial reading (The Hindu, Indian Express) — builds the reading speed and comprehension that 2.5 hours of GAT demands.

GAT Part B is 100 questions for 400 marks covering Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography and Current Affairs — the classical 9–10 level NCERT range. It is the biggest single marks block in the written exam.

   Pass 1 (months 1–6): NCERT chapter fully solved, then the matching R.S. Aggarwal section and a topic test. Maths daily; GAT subjects in blocks.

   Pass 2 (months 6–9): Pathfinder complete + compression notes from Lucent and NCERT; start one full-length paper every 2 weeks.

   Pass 3 (final 8–10 weeks): only solved papers, mocks and your marked-wrong question log. No new books. Add the SSB prep in parallel — it is half the total marks.

• Multiple books for the same subject at the same level — pick one per subject and finish it.
• 'Last-minute crash' books bought two weeks before the exam — the final weeks belong to solved papers and mocks.
• JEE/NEET-difficulty reference stacks — NDA maths and science stay at 10+2 level; solve them, don't over-reference them.
• Outdated editions of the NDA pattern — the marking scheme and syllabus are stable, but always buy the current-print NCERT and a recent-years solved papers book.
