Class 11 — build the base (4 books)

Class 11 is where roughly half of JEE Physics and Physics-of-everything lives. The base shelf is deliberately small:

    NCERT Physics 11 + Chemistry 11 + Maths 11 — the foundation. Solve every example by hand.

    HC Verma Vol 1 — the first Physics reference, chapter by chapter after each NCERT chapter.

    RD Sharma 11 — for Maths depth in Algebra and Trigonometry.
  4. 4
    OP Tandon (Physical Chemistry part) — if your school chemistry runs on it; otherwise start it in Class 12.

The Class 11 rule

Do not buy Advanced books in Class 11. A student who finishes the base shelf properly in Class 11 is far ahead of one who owns Irodov and has panic-bought nothing finished.

Class 12 — add the references (3 new books)

    NCERT Physics 12 + Chemistry 12 + Maths 12 — continue the base, same method.

    HC Verma Vol 2 — completes Physics (EMI, optics, modern).

    OP Tandon (full) — Physical Chemistry numericals now.

    RD Sharma 12 — Maths workhorse; switch to Cengage only for Calculus/Coordinate sections you find weak.

Finishing beats starting

Every subject should have exactly one 'in-progress' reference book. The reason JEE toppers have small shelves is the same reason they finish books: one deep stream at a time.

Final 6 months — the PYQ + revision stack (2–3 books)

    One chapterwise JEE Main PYQ book (Arihant or similar) — the single most important purchase of the final phase.

    One full-mock test series (printed or online) — 25–35 tests mirroring the paper.
  3. 3
    Irodov / Cengage Advanced — optional, only the chapters your mock analysis flags as weak.

No new books after month 6-of-final-year

The last 8 weeks belong to PYQs, mocks, and re-solving your marked-wrong questions. A shiny new book in January is a time sink, not a rank tool.

That is 8–10 books across two years. If your stack is already past 15, the next purchase should be a notebook, not another title.

Mistakes that make books useless

  • Buying 'latest edition hype' titles mid-year — syllabus changes rarely justify abandoning your in-progress book.
  • Solving reference problems before the NCERT chapter is closed.
  • Treating PYQs as 'practice only in the last month' — they should drive revision from 6 months out.
  • Not marking wrong questions — every finished book should be covered in margin marks and a mistake log.
  • Comparing shelves with batchmates instead of finishing your own.
